Knee

Anatomy of the Knee

The knee joint is more than a simple hinge joint. It is designed to carry much of the force of bending such as stair climbing and rising from a seated position.

Knees are a functional combination of following elements:

  • Bones
  • Articular Cartilage
  • Meniscus
  • Ligaments
  • Muscles

Meniscus Tear

The knee Joints are lined by extremely smooth tissue called “articular cartilage.”

The articular cartilage of the knee coats

  • The end of the femur (thigh bone),
  • The top surface of the tibia (shin bone) and
  • The back surface of the patella (kneecap)

Cartilage Wear (Arthritis)

The knee Joints are lined by extremely smooth tissue called “articular cartilage.”

The articular cartilage of the knee coats

  • The end of the femur (thigh bone),
  • The top surface of the tibia (shin bone) and
  • The back surface of the patella (kneecap)

ACL Reconstruction

The ACL is a strong rope like structure located in the center of the knee. It crosses from the back of your femur (thighbone) and runs down to the front of your tibia (shinbone).

The function of the ACL is to provide stability to the knee.

Knee Joint Replacement

Knee joint replacement helps patients in the treatment for severely diseased knee joints. A joint replacement procedure is designed to:

  • Relieve pain
  • Reduce symptoms
  • Restore mobility
  • Regain function and
  • The knee joint can become worn-out most commonly as a result of osteoarthritis but may also result from other causes such as trauma or injuries, meniscal tears and overuse.

Total Knee Replacement (TKR)

A total knee replacement (TKR) or total knee arthroplasty is a surgery used to replace a knee joint that is affected by arthritis.

Total Knee Replacement surgery replaces the arthritic knee joint with an artificial metal or plastic replacement parts called the 'prostheses'.

Osteoarthritis

Arthritis is a general term covering more than 100 conditions where the joint surface (cartilage) wears out. The joint surface is covered by a smooth articular surface that allows pain free movement in the joint.

When the articular cartilage wears out, the bone ends rub on one another and cause pain. There are many conditions that can cause arthritis and often the exact cause is never known.

Urgent Injury Clinic

To cater for the sports enthusiast Dr Biggs runs regular Acute Knee Injury Clinics.

Knee injuries can be quite painful and debilitating.

In my practice we keep specific appointments for urgent knee and shoulder injuries so patients can be seen urgently (within a few days)
